The last pony express rider 1861 11 yrs old. He lived to 1955
The 11 year old rider is Charlie Miller…better known later as Bronco Billy. Lived till 105 years old. Rode the Carson City to Placerville route.
This is my back in the saddle story, inspired by flying cars and this photo from 1861 which is the same year my great grandfather was born in Salt Lake City, his name was Arthur Day, born 100 years before me.
Row boat from Seattle to New Westminster (150 miles by sea) is how he escaped, after working in a mine and saving enough to buy the vessel. I kid you not… he was a true legend in the Okanagan Valley, where my Dad and my Grandfather were born.
I was raised in this valley and on this lake, which astounds me to consider that my great-grandfather also rowed this lake of 97 miles, from end to end and discovered a gold mine in Penticton, which he later sold for enough cash to purchase thousands of acres in a little town called Kelowna.
The escape from Salt Lake City came in 1881, when Arthur was just 19 years old. That same year polygamy was abolished in Utah, so there must have been a big upheaval in the Mormon community and enough of a window of opportunity to exit stage left. Young Arthur had a plan and he took radical action.
Great idea to leave Seattle by row boat and make a run for Canada. Arthur had 7 sons, my grandpa being the youngest and only educated at the University of Toronto, graduate of 1921 and the first Dentist in Kelowna. Not one word of the great escape was mentioned and anything Mormon was completely discarded.
We are living in extraordinary times, not just flying cars, robots and Super Intelligence but freedom of expression is blossoming and with it truth is exposed. My favorite way of observing the world, is through the lens of the spirit.
Accordingly, here’s what I want to add;
Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
Luke 9:60-10:11 KJV
We forward in this generation, triumphantly! In God we trust.
