VPS, Dedicated and Cloud Hosting Compared

When shared hosting runs out of room, choose the right amount of control for your workload and your team’s skills.

Who this is for

Growing digital firms and busy sites that need more capacity, more control or more consistent performance than shared hosting gives, and that have someone who can run a server.

Readiness checklist

  • Your site is regularly slow on shared hosting, or you’ve hit plan limits.
  • You need software or settings that shared hosting doesn’t allow.
  • Someone on your team, or a contractor, can manage Linux servers: updates, firewalls, backups.
  • You have a plan for monitoring and for what happens when something breaks.
  • Your budget covers the server and the time to look after it.

Ticked fewer than three? A higher shared hosting plan is probably the better choice for now.

Linux KVM VPS

VPS Hosting

Outcome: your own slice of a server with dedicated resources and root access. Best for: sites and apps that have outgrown shared hosting. Keep in mind: you manage the operating system, software and security.

Dedicated servers

Dedicated Servers

Outcome: a whole server for heavy, steady workloads. Best for: established businesses with demanding sites and server skills in-house. Keep in mind: the highest cost and the most administration. Try a VPS first unless you know you need a full server.

What about cloud hosting?

Cloud hosting spreads a site across a pool of servers, so resources can grow or shrink and one failed machine doesn’t take the site down. It suits workloads with unpredictable traffic.

We don’t currently sell a cloud hosting product. For most growing sites, a VPS gives similar dedicated resources and control. If you need true cloud scaling, tell us about your project and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Questions buyers ask

VPS or dedicated?

Start with a VPS. Move to dedicated only when a large VPS is consistently fully used, or when you need a whole machine for compliance or performance reasons.

Is the VPS managed?

Assume you manage it: operating system updates, security and software. Check the plan page on the store for any management options before you buy.

Can I move from shared hosting to a VPS?

Yes, but it’s a migration, not an upgrade button. Plan it like moving to a new host.
