Year of the Golden Pig

It turns out that my Mom is born in the year of the pig, so we've been writing back and forth to share little things we've learned about this auspicious year. Now an Asian friends from Vancouver informed me that Chinese people are excited because we're entering the "Year of the Golden Pig" and it only happens every 60 or so years.

This morning I watched a chilling report on BBC World about how websites and the Internet are used to promote and recruit for global Islamic terror networks. Just writing about this topic makes me nervous because we're such a networked world and the search engines pick up and connect every word, which is why I'll avoid using any organization names or provide any web site locations. The power of the Internet to bring good into people's lives has always been the focus of my attention, so much so that I neglected to think much about how the web was being used for evil.

Davos Switzerland is famous for ground breaking advancements in social programs. Each year technology has become more and more center stage at the schmooze fest for global titans, although this year Iraq was also high on the agenda.

Last night I watched a special on CNN live from Davos, hosted by Becky Anderson, called "Our Networked World" with a live audience who each had a wireless device to provide polling to questions asked during the discussion. The panel was a good mix of industry experts and the topic was Web 2.0.

Sustainable Innovation

I stand corrected about the concept of a "Social Footprint" thanks to a message from Mark McElroy the Executive Director of The Center for Sustainable Innovation, I've learned that a team of esteemed sustainability researchers, and management consulting veterans, introduced the Social Footprint methodology and Proof of Concept to the world, just one year ago this coming March.

Today I was running a few laps at my club and thinking about what ideas I'd like to write about. Then my eyes started looking at the trees, plants, and flowers that surround the track, I realized that I was the only one there in the middle of a Monday afternoon the track was all mine.

Occasionally I read a Blog about making money with websites called Problogger.net by Darren Rowse, it's packed with good advice and cool ideas. Last week a guest blogger named Tony Hung posted an article called "Understanding the Rules of Great Content" in which he shares some wisdom about how to keep the content flowing.

"The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin. When all is orderly, he does not forget that disorder may come. Thus his person is not endangered, and his States and all their clans are preserved."

-Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC)

Especially pertinent to people in the on-line gaming industry that enjoy travel to, or living in USA.

Clube Paineiras do Morumby

In June of 2006, almost the middle of winter here in Brazil, I brought a digital camera to my health club and captured some images of the facility and surrounding vistas. At least 3 days per week I drive for 15 minutes (each way) to visit this awesome recreational resource. On the weekends and holidays during the summer the pool areas are busy with people but there's so much space that you can always find a lounge chair, tennis court, or enjoy the other great amenities.

I tend to get so caught-up in my day to day life that I often forget that I'm living in Brazil. This didn't happen in the beginning, I remember waking up during the first few weeks here and thinking; wow! I'm in Brazil. Now after four years in this wonderful place I have to remind myself not to become complacent, or let my guard down.

Neteller Founders Busted

The alert came in an email message this morning, then later in the day the story broke across mainstream news-media. The U.S. Gov. held a press conference in London to make the announcement that the 2 founders of Neteller both Canadian citizens had been arrested and charged with money-laundering.

Rumor has it that Ladbrokes of London are in discussion to purchase 888.com for about the same number of millions of dollars (888). How fitting that the largest global gaming company buys the largest online casino, just as I predicted they would do, after they divested themselves of the U.S. Hilton Hotel franchise.

...nothing gained.

I needed to sign up to another MLM program as much as I need another hole in my head but having received a message from an old trusted friend named Julio, describing a very simple program, that was conceived and launched by a mutual friend, who lays claim to having made fortunes and set records in Network Marketing (verifiable). Plus, the product was something I actually needed, so I joined and became the 1,777th member, 17 days from launch.

Art is a result of human creativity which has some perceived quality beyond its usefulness, usually on the basis of aesthetic value or emotional impact.
~ Wikipedia

Such a broad topic; Art, that it could have dozens of categories and subcategories. Anyone can be an Art Critic and probably everyone is, to some degree or another.

Social Footprint

I like this new term "carbon footprint" and the idea it promotes that each of us on the planet has a responsibility to reduce the amount of natural resources we consume because our consumption is proportional to the rate of global warming, hence our own carbon foot print. This notion means that every person can do something about the problem, aside from pointing the finger at governments and corporations.

Next we need to raise people's conscience about the social condition of our planet.

In the city of Sao Paulo there are purported to be over 3,000 restaurants and featuring foods of every ethnicity you'd find in any world-class city. Certainly the beef is famous and many people have heard of churrasco (a Brazilian counterpart of the barbecue), especially since Brazilian restaurants are now popular throughout the world. What you may not have heard about is the cuisine of Minas Gerais, this Southeastern region is the industrial heart of Brazil, and is home to several distinctive cooking styles.

Money makes the world go around...

The sound of an ATM machine as it counts stacks of notes to mechanically push through the slot of a machine. The feeling of stuffing a stack of fresh cash into the wallet, or the joyous feeling of logging onto your bank account from an online computer and seeing that a deposit or wire transfer has increased the available balance. These things can change a bad mood.

It seems incorrect to wish someone a "Happy New Year" (perhaps a happy new year's eve). However, I think it's unrealistic to be happy for an entire year. We should wish someone a "Healthy New Year", now that's realistic and would certainly make anyone happy.

It's time to get my mind back on making money, so it can be spent on more travel and lifestyle. Planning a trip to Santa Catarina to experience the great beaches of Southern Brazil and visit the city of Florianópolis, for sometime in February, so stay tuned.

Meanwhile, it's time once again to analyze and then improve the search engine rankings of my sites an blogs. Search engine marketing is not my favorite task but it's very important, so much so that it could, or maybe should, be a full-time occupation. I'll review some of my tips for search engine marketing.

My good friends from Miami own a landscape business, they impressed upon me the beauty of landscape as an art-form, and then introduced me to the work of a Brazilian legend.

Roberto Burle Marx is internationally known as one of the most important landscape architects of the 20th century.

An artist of multiple facets, besides being a landscape designer he was also a remarkable painter, sculptor, singer, and jewelry designer, with a sensibility that is shown throughout his work.
